Reducing footwear returns: connect customer feedback to the factory

An inspection pass does not always predict fit, comfort or durability in use. Connect what customers report to the product requirements and production conditions that can explain it.

Use this checklist in a management discussion or a short observation of the work. Record the evidence, the gap and the person who can act. It is a starting point for assessment; the right response depends on your operating conditions.

01

Make return reasons usable

Group feedback by product, issue and severity. Separate fit, comfort, durability, appearance, wrong item and information-related returns. Keep the customer’s description available alongside the coded category.

02

Follow the product record

Link the issue to the design version, supplier and available production or material batch information. Identify gaps in traceability without assuming that every return can be assigned to a manufacturing cause.

03

Compare standards with use

Review approved samples, fit and wear-test findings, inspection criteria and the intended customer experience. Check whether the acceptance standard actually covers the condition customers describe.

04

Observe the relevant process

Follow the material and work steps connected to the suspected issue. Review preparation, handling, process settings, waiting times and operator methods. Confirm the cause through evidence before changing a specification or blaming a supplier.

05

Control the improvement

Assign product, quality, supplier and production owners to the agreed change. Update the approved information, train the people doing the work and verify that the revised process is consistently followed.

06

Check the full result

Track the relevant return reason after the product change, allowing for sales volume and time in use. Review first-pass yield, rework and delivery alongside customer results. Evaluate digital instructions or AI inspection only where they address a validated gap.
